Anyone who has ever seen the movie ‘Time of the Gypsies’ by Emir Kusturica will remember the soundtrack with the shrill, swinging and driving sounds of a Balkan brass orchestra. These are the musicians in the Ork. Kadrievi, performing from the depths of their souls.
In the Kadrievi family musical talent is passed from generation to generation. Ork. Kadrievi was founded in 1923 in Macedonia and is now a transnational band lead by young talented trumpetist Seven Kadriev, who received many awards at the International Trumpet Festival in Guča. The band’s style combines deep Romani roots and community traditions with a modern sensibility. It represents the highest quality of artistry in the younger generation. Ork. Kadrievi evokes a range of emotions from sad ballads to lively dance music. The orchestra performs at Balkan diaspora community events as well as world music festivals.
The band has showcased its talent at many festivals, including the 2016 Festival of Brass Music, Pehčevo, North Macedonia (where Seven won the Golden Trumpet award); Golden Palm in Cannes FR (1989); Couleur Café FR (2013), Balkan Trafik BE (2021, 2013, 2011, 2007); International Gipsy Festival NL (2013, 2012, 2011); Khamoro CZ (2010); Sfinks BE (2007), ManoMundo BE (2005); and many more. Seven Kadriev recently collaborated with early music composer Jordi Savall in Bal-Kan: Honey and Blood (Brussels, 2021). He also directed the 2021 the Balkan All Stars project, including legend Ferus Mustafov.
